Uttarakhand, the “Land of the Gods,” has once again been struck by a natural calamity, as a devastating flash flood ripped through its serene landscapes, the recent disaster, its likely causes, the ongoing rescue and relief operations.

The recent flash flood, triggered by a powerful surge of water and debris, has left a trail of destruction in its wake. The worst-hit area is the high-altitude village of Dharali in the Uttarkashi district, a popular stop on the route to Gangotri. The calamity unfolded with terrifying speed.
* Initial Incident: On August 5, 2025, at around 1:45 PM IST, a devastating cloudburst occurred over the upper catchment of the Kheer Ganga River in Uttarkashi district, triggering a catastrophic flash flood ,The worst-hit area is the high-altitude village of Dharali in the Uttarkashi district,a key waypoint en route to Gangotri Dham. Within minutes, torrents of water, debris, and mud swept through, flattening homes, shops, hotels, and much of the village infrastructures.
* Widespread Destruction: Dramatic visuals and firsthand accounts reveal the sheer force of the flood. Entire buildings were flattened, and the ancient Kalp Kedar temple was buried under debris. The Uttarkashi-Harsil road has been completely washed out in several places, severely hampering connectivity.
* Human Toll: The disaster has resulted in confirmed fatalities, with dozens of people still feared missing atleast 4 people confirmed dead, with the toll feared to rise . Other reports mention at least 5 confirmed fatalities .
A staggering 50 to 100+ people—including 11 Indian Army personnel from a nearby Harsil camp—remain missing and feared trapped under debris .
Over 60 to 130 individuals have been rescued, evacuated to safety by Army, NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and local teams .
